About Lumia

Lumia reads three old systems — Western astrology, Chinese five-element astrology (BaZi), and tarot — and says what it finds in ordinary English. It is built and run by Han Wang at Meridian Labs LLC.

Who builds it

I am a software engineer, and Lumia started as a personal irritation rather than a business plan. Most astrology apps ask for your birth date and then hand back something written for everybody born that month. That is not astrology; it is a horoscope column with a login. If the chart is going to be cast at all, it should be cast properly — from your date, your time and your place — and then described honestly.

So the engineering is the product. I wrote the chart pipeline, the BaZi implementation and the reading layer, and I write the editorial posts on the blog — the ones signed with my name. Reference posts that explain a system rather than argue something are published under Lumia.

How the readings are calculated

Planetary positions come from Swiss Ephemeris, the same library used in academic and professional astronomy software. Nothing is approximated and nothing is looked up in a table of sun-sign text. Your ascendant, midheaven and house cusps are computed from the horizon at your birthplace, which is why the birth time matters to the minute — an hour moves the ascendant by roughly fifteen degrees, often a whole sign.

The BaZi side is a real four-pillars engine. It resolves the year, month, day and hour pillars, the day master and its strength, and the balance of the five elements — using the historical timezone in force at your birth, not today’s. (China observed daylight saving from 1986 to 1991, which is the sort of detail that quietly ruins a chart.)

Tarot is a seeded shuffle, not a random-looking animation with the answer chosen afterwards. The deal is reproducible from its seed.

What it will not do

Lumia does not predict events. Readings describe what is likely, what is worth attention and what you might do — never something fixed that you cannot act on. Where the writing names a technique, it says what that technique means for you rather than leaving the term standing on its own.

It is also not advice. Nothing here is medical, legal, or financial guidance, and no reading should stand in for a professional who can actually look at your situation.

Your data

Birth details are encrypted where they are stored. Journal entries are private by default and are never sold or handed to advertisers. Written readings are generated by a model, and that requires your explicit consent, asked for separately from payment — agreeing to one is not agreeing to the other. The privacy policy spells out what is shared and with whom.

Which Lumia is this?

Lumia at withlumia.app is the astrology, tarot and BaZi app described on this page, built by Meridian Labs LLC. It is not the Nokia and Microsoft Lumia phones, which were discontinued in 2016, and it has nothing to do with the Lumia blockchain. It is also not the meditation app at withlumia.com — same name, different product, different company.
