BaZi, the Chinese four pillars: what it is and how Lumia reads it
BaZi is the Chinese system that reads a person from the calendar of their birth. The year, month, day and hour each become a pillar of two characters, a heavenly stem over an earthly branch, and every character carries one of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, water. Eight characters, four pillars, one balance of elements. Lumia casts it from the same birth entry as your Western chart and reads the two together.
What a BaZi chart tells you that a Western chart does not
A Western chart maps where the planets stood. BaZi maps what you are made of. Its central question is not “which sign are you” but “which element are you, and is it strong or weak” — and from that, what supplies you and what costs you. That turns into practical answers: the kind of work that feeds you, the conditions you run down in, the people who balance you, and the decade you are in.
The four pillars
The year pillar is your generation and your outer setting; its branch is the zodiac animal most people know. The month pillar is your season, the strongest single influence on the balance. The day pillar is you: its stem is the day master, the element the whole chart is read around, and its branch is your partner and your private life. The day master
Ten stems, so ten day masters: yang and yin of each element. Yang wood is a tree, yin wood a vine; yang fire the sun, yin fire a candle; and so on through earth, metal and water. Which one you are says how you move. Whether it is strong or weak — how much support it has from the other seven characters — says what you need. Your day master.
The five elements
Each element feeds one and controls another: wood feeds fire, fire feeds earth, earth feeds metal, metal feeds water, water feeds wood; wood controls earth, earth controls water, water controls fire, fire controls metal, metal controls wood. Timing: the luck pillars
