How to read a BaZi chart, pillar by pillar
A BaZi chart is eight characters in four columns. Reading one is a fixed sequence: find the day master, judge whether it is strong or weak, count the elements, then read the pillars for the areas of life they govern and the luck pillars for timing. Here is that sequence, in the order a reader actually uses it.
1. Know what you are looking at
Four columns, right to left in the traditional layout: year, month, day, hour. Each column has a heavenly stem on top and an earthly branch below. Every stem and every branch carries an element. The branches also hide one to three further stems inside them, which is why an experienced reader counts more than eight elements. The zodiac animal is the branch of the year column.
2. Find the day master
The stem of the day column. This is you. Everything else is read relative to it: the stems that feed it, the ones it feeds, the ones that control it, the ones it controls. The ten day masters.
3. Judge strong or weak
Look first at the month branch — the season. A wood day master born in spring, the wood season, starts strong; born in autumn, the metal season, starts weak. Then count support elsewhere: the day master’s own element and the element that feeds it. Roughly, more than half the chart in support is strong; less is weak. This one judgement decides the direction of every piece of advice that follows.
4. Count the elements
Which dominates, which is missing. Read the dominant one as what you are good at and overdo, the missing one as what you run short of and must supply. Then apply the cycles: the element that feeds your day master is the one to seek; the one that controls it is the one to watch. The five elements.

6. Read the ten gods
Each other stem in the chart is named by its relation to the day master: the ones that feed it are resources, the ones it produces are output, the ones it controls are wealth, the ones that control it are authority, the ones of its own element are peers. Which of these families dominates says what the chart is organised around — being provided for, expressing, acquiring, being responsible, standing alone.
7. Read the luck pillars for timing
From your birth, ten-year periods run in order, each with a stem and a branch. A luck pillar that supplies what your chart is short of is a decade that feeds you; one that adds to your excess is a decade to hold.
